Disposable pinch tube valves are designed for the regulating of continuous or micro-shot applications of low to semi-viscous fluids. A semi-automatic version is dependent on a controller forwarding a pre-programmed signal, to open the valve and permit the flow of fluid. Once the dispensing cycle is completed, the air signal ceases and an internal spring forces the shut-off piston to "pinch" the disposable feed path, thus preventing a further flow of fluid.

The development of a hand-to-hand version has enabled an operator to replace the dispensing controller. The pressing and releasing motion of the finger lever produces a start-stop action and both versions have a built-in adjustment for the rate of flow.

Going back to the first observations by Edison and to the invention of the vacuum tube thermionic valve or tube valves; this was the first time that the world became familiar with the age of electronics. It enabled the wireless technology of the day to progress, with many new and exciting devices and many other applications that were not associated with wireless. However, it was not until the start of the twentieth century that the first vacuum tube was made.

In the present day, the normal vacuum tube sometimes known as thermionic valve or tube valves are rarely seen, apart from in vintage radio equipment. They have practically been taken over by semi-conductor technology, which unfortunately does not have the character of the old thermionic valve. Many audio applications continue to use tube valves especially in the upper home audio and guitar amplifier markets. Some stereo enthusiasts promote the use of tube amplifiers for home listening, mainly because they feel that these amplifiers produce a more natural sound. There are companies in various countries that produce tube valves to cater especially for this particular market.

Within the guitar amplifier market, many performers today use tube valves amplifiers. They are particularly common within folk music, roots rock and the harder sound genres such as heavy metal, where a heavily distorted sound is created. It is suggested by audio engineers that the desired aspects of this amplification method could be created by the non-linear overdrive that is produced with the tubes.

Tube valves have a high voltage in comparison to transistors, which usually perform at lower voltages and higher currents for the same power level. This high operating voltage means that tube valves are suitable for radio transmitters. For example, the requirements for high powered radio transmitters demand tube valves, while there is not a replacement technology for them. However, for those applications that need a substantial output current, a matching transformer is required. It has a high influence on the performance and cost of an amplifier.

Many of the units project high amounts of heat and some extreme devices even need to be water cooled. This is one reason why tube valves are the only viable technology for extremely powerful applications, such as radio and television transmitters. It is also the reason why they have not been displaced by transistors, as in most other applications. Add to this, the fact that they are robust and are able to tolerate overloads for minutes. This factor would destroy bipolar transistor systems in a matter of mille-seconds.
